The Origin Story

Every collection starts somewhere. Mine started in Chinatown.

I met my brother later in childhood, and one of the first things we bonded over was old kung fu flicks — the grainy, dubbed-over classics with iron-palm masters and rogue swordsmen. We'd make trips to Chinatown in New York City, combing through shops for new releases the moment they dropped, stacking VHS tapes and DVDs until the shelves couldn't hold any more. Over the years, what started as a shared hobby became a serious collection — and more than that, a tradition.

Those films gave us more than entertainment. They taught me about loyalty, honor, and discipline — values I carried into everything else I pursued. I went on to practice martial arts myself, fell in love with Chinese-influenced culture and philosophy, and grew up with the Wu-Tang Clan as the soundtrack to all of it.

From Collection to Code

When I started studying computer science in school and learned about databases, one of the first things I built was a small, humble kung fu database — a way to search and catalog the collection my brother and I had amassed over the years. His collection, really. It was simple, but it worked, and it planted a seed.

For years, that idea stayed in the back of my mind: What if I could bring this concept back to life — and expand it into something bigger?

Martial Arts: Secret Expert is the answer.

This is the evolution of that original database — rebuilt from the ground up as a living platform for collectors, fans, and anyone who shares the love for martial arts cinema and the culture that surrounds it.

What We've Built — and Where We're Going

That humble database? It's now a real-time platform with over 5,500 titles spanning kung fu, wuxia, samurai, and action cinema from around the world — each enriched with 40+ metadata fields covering everything from fight choreographers and martial arts styles to special editions and region codes. And it keeps growing, with new releases discovered automatically every week.

But it's more than a database. You can build and manage your own collection — tracking formats from VHS to 4K UHD Steelbook, logging condition, acquisition details, and watch history. Browse your shelf in a traditional grid or step into a 3D showcase where your collection sits on procedural wooden shelves, with format-accurate cases, poster art, spotlight lighting, and hover effects that let you inspect each title up close.

The social layer ties it all together. Follow other collectors, share recommendations with friends, react to what people send you, and keep up with your community through a real-time activity feed and notification system. Public profiles let you show off your stats, your ranks, and your taste. And if you want to share a title, a collection, or a recommendation with someone outside the platform — unique share links make it one click.

There's a wishlist system with priority tracking and retailer price monitoring. An admin layer with rank badges, data tools, and discovery pipelines. A Discord bot with slash commands for searching titles, looking up collections, and sending recommendations without leaving the server.

And this is still just the beginning. The roadmap includes AI-powered recommendations, subscription tiers, a full design overhaul, analytics, a community Discord server, and native mobile apps for iOS and Android. There are so many ideas and features we want to bring to life — and we'll keep building, keep refining, and keep expanding what we make available to everyone.

Will there be changes along the way? Absolutely. Some good, and hopefully most of them good — but if we stumble, we'll learn from it and come back better. That's the way.

Who I Am

My name is Justin, and I run QuantumInk.dev — a development agency specializing in web and mobile applications, services and solutions, APIs, AI integrations, automations, and custom agent deployments.

But Secret Expert isn't a client project. It's a passion project — born from real memories, a real collection, and a genuine love for the culture. The same discipline and craft I bring to my agency work goes into every line of code here, but this one's personal.
